General City & Parks Maintenance

Under general supervision of the Public Works Director, participates in the operations and maintenance of City Parks and other properties. Performs supervisory duties for parks maintenance employees. Performs duties with the Public Works department during the winter months under the supervision of the Public Works director, and other duties as assigned or required. 

  1. Responsible for grounds maintenance at all City-owned properties; including mowing and trimming grass and weeds, applying weed control chemicals, and cutting brush and trees.
  2. Responsible for building maintenance on all Park and Pool buildings.
  3. Provide first-line supervision to parks seasonal maintenance workers and assign daily duties.
  4. Work in the Public Works Department during winter months and other times as needed, performing the duties of Public Works Employee related to water, sanitary sewer, storm sewer, and streets.
  5. Operate snow removal equipment, sanding equipment and clear snow and ice from city streets and properties.
  6. Tree maintenance for all trees on City-owned lands; maintenance duties include planting, mulching, staking and watering new trees; and inspecting and trimming mature trees; working with other City departments regarding the proposed removal of trees.
  7. Perform maintenance on equipment including mowers, trimmers, chain saws, and other small equipment.
  8. Assists campground attendant with maintenance of the campground.
  9. Inspection and maintenance of playground equipment and ball diamonds.
  10. Maintain picnic tables, fire rings and dumpsters; place these items for use in parks and the campground.
  11. Ensure all trash and dog waste receptacles are emptied.

Other Job Functions to Include:

  • Working in conjunction with the Public Works director and Park Board to identify priorities for parks maintenance and development.
  • Assist other City departments as needed
Desired Qualifications:

The desired applicant will possess: 

  • Ability to effectively operate grounds maintenance equipment including, but not limited to: mower, trimmer, and motor vehicle.
  • Ability to use logical thinking to solve problems.
  • Knowledge of the principles and practices of grounds care and maintenance.
  • Ability to operate and maintain grounds maintenance equipment such as mowers and sprayers with such proficiency that he/she could train others.
  • Ability to plan, assign and direct the work of seasonal employees.
  • Ability to establish and maintain an effective working relationship with co-workers and the public.
  • Ability to perform manual labor for extended periods of time often in inclement weather.

Required Physical Activities:

  • Heavy work requiring exertion of up to 100 pounds of force occasionally and up to 50 pounds frequently.
  • This work is primarily outdoors and includes seasonal exposure to cold and heat. This position also experiences exposure to dust/dirt, moving machinery, working on uneven ground, mechanical hazards, and traffic hazards.

Required Education:

  • High School Diploma or equivalent GED required
  • Drivers License Required
  • Must reside within ten miles of Sanborn City limits or have the ability to relocate within a reasonable time
  • Must have the ability to obtain Grade I Water Treatment, Water Distribution, and Wastewater licenses as soon as the state's experience requirements are met.
  • Must have the ability to obtain a license for commerical chemical application.

Pre-employment drug screening is required; employees subject to random and resonable suspicion drug and alcohol testing as well.
